Nerve BlockThe term "nerve block" can mean a number of different things. Nerve blocks generally involve injecting a local anesthetic or a neurolytic agent to alter a nerve's ability to transmit pain signals.Peripheral nerves are those outside the brain and spinal cord primarily responsible for transmitting sensation and motor (movement) control. Sympathetic nerves extend the length of the spine and control some of the involuntary functions of the body such as regulating blood flow, sweating, and glandular function. Both peripheral and sympathetic nerves can be damaged by trauma, surgery, scar tissue, or illness. Blocks of these nerves can provide important diagnostic information and lead to a significant reduction of pain. A nerve block can be short or long term, depending on the technique, and are used to treat many different types of pain including:
When deeper injections are necessary to alleviate pain, your doctor may employ advanced curved needle techniques. By using curved needles and fluoroscopic guidance, a pain specialist can gently guide the pain medicine directly to the target. This avoids the need for multiple attempts to position the needle properly, resulting in better needle placement and less discomfort. Nerve blocks can be performed as a single injection, continuous infusion, or nerve destruction. Nerve blocks may relieve pain from several hours to several months. In many cases, nerve blocks are performed in conjunction with a rehabilitation program and can provide a window of opportunity to proceed with effective rehabilitation.
