Sacroiliac Joint Injections

The sacroiliac joints are small joints in the lower back and buttocks where the pelvis joins with the spine.  They help absorb all of the damaging shock forces of the upper body before balancing and transmitting their weight to the hips and legs.

If the joints become painful, as is common with sacroiliac joint dysfunction, moderate to severe discomfort may result in the lower back, buttocks, abdomen, groin or legs.

A sacroiliac joint injection can help in several ways:
  • Diagnosis
By delivering pain relief medicine into the joint, the degree of immediate pain relief experienced will help confirm whether the joint is the source of pain.

  • Pain Relief Enables Treatment
The temporary relief provided by the pain medicine may allow a chiropractor or physical therapist to treat that joint without causing the patient great discomfort.

  • Reduced Inflammation
Time-released cortisone, a common steroid, helps to reduce the inflammation causing the pain in the joint(s).

Sacroiliac joint injections are usually performed with the assistance of xray imaging, commonly called fluoroscopyXray imaging enables the physician to see the injection via a "live movie" to ensure proper needle and medication placement.

The relief brought on by sacroiliac joint injections will generally last several weeks to several months but the procedure should be repeated as necessary to properly manage pain.

Pain relief injections are only an adjunct treatment and should not be used in a stand-alone manner.

Relieving the pain, however, can facilitate participation in an active rehabilitation and ongoing exercise program, which may help avoid the need for surgical intervention.
